Daraya is an ancient Syrian city located in the countryside near the Syrian capital, Damascus. The name of this city is derived from the word dar, or ‘home’. As for the word daraya, it is a Syriac word meaning ‘many houses’. It is my city. I have lived my life there and my most beautiful times with my family before the war.
The population of Daraya exceeds 255000, according to the 2007 census. Most of Daraya’s people work in agriculture, carpentry, trade and some handicrafts. It is also famous for its vineyards, walnuts, potatoes, anise, apples, pomegranates, raisins and olives.
